Reading

1. Read the passage, then answer the question.

The night shift at the plant starts at ten. Marcus eats dinner at four so he can sleep from five to nine, and his wife sets the coffee maker for nine-fifteen. His daughter's soccer games are Saturday mornings, when he is usually asleep, so he watches them later on his phone.

Taken as a whole, this passage shows that

  1. A. Marcus and his family have adjusted their routines around his night-shift schedule.
  2. B. Marcus eats dinner at four in the afternoon.
  3. C. shift work is hard on families everywhere.
  4. D. Marcus misses his daughter's soccer games.
Show the answer

Answer: A. Every detail, from the early dinner to the recorded games, is a change the family makes for his shift. B is one detail, C goes beyond the passage, and D leaves out that he watches the games later.

2. An article about a new supervisor includes this sentence: "Every hard question at the town meeting bounced off Reyes like hail off a tin roof." What does that comparison most nearly suggest about Reyes?

  1. A. The questions struck Reyes hard and left him struggling to hold his ground
  2. B. Reyes was standing outdoors in bad weather while the meeting went on
  3. C. The questions left Reyes untouched, and he let none of them land
  4. D. Nothing about Reyes; the sentence only shows that the writer chose a simile
Show the answer

Answer: C. Hail bounces off a tin roof without doing damage. In the same way, the hard questions did not shake Reyes.

3. Read the passage, then answer the question.

The county report warns that the hillside above the highway has lost most of its trees. Engineers expect erosion to carry soil down onto the road after every heavy rain.

As used in the passage, the word erosion most nearly means

  1. A. a steady loss of public confidence in an agency
  2. B. the gradual wearing away and carrying off of soil by water or wind
  3. C. a sudden bursting out of material from below the ground
  4. D. the cutting down of the trees on a slope
Show the answer

Answer: B. With the trees gone, rain wears the soil loose and carries it down to the road. D is the cause the report gives, not the meaning of the word.

  1. A. 43 pallets
  2. B. 42 pallets
  3. C. 44 pallets

Which TABE subjects does this practice test cover?
This practice test covers all three TABE subjects: Reading, Math and Language.
Can I use a calculator on TABE math?
On some parts, yes. TABE 13&14 Math uses the Desmos calculator on screen. On TABE 11&12, Part 2 of the math test at levels M, D and A uses a calculator. On the online test, the calculator shows on the screen when it is allowed.
What level of the TABE will I take?
A short locator test decides your level for each TABE subject. Your level can be different in reading, math and language.
